The Robotics Group at United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Research Engineer, Robotics. The Robotics Group is part of the Autonomous and Intelligent Systems Department and supports the UTRC mission by developing and transitioning algorithms and techniques in perception, planning for autonomy (mobility, manipulation, and task execution), and human-robot collaboration for intelligent robotic systems of relevance to United Technologies Corporation (UTC). The Robotics Group works with the broader UTRC to bring innovative, emerging, and disruptive technologies in robotics and related areas into UTC manufacturing, service, and inspection operations, and ultimately for use in its products. Applications at UTC focus on aerospace (gas turbine engines and aerospace subsystems, including autonomous capabilities) as well as commercial systems (HVAC/R systems and components, elevator, fire safety, security, and integrated building systems including integration of buildings into the electrical power grid). By combining a fundamental understanding of robot kinematics, dynamics, control, AI, and sensing & perception with advanced tools and techniques for modeling, simulation, human-robot interaction and machine learning, UTRC provides our UTC business unit partners and external customers with world-class robotics solutions.
The primary responsibilities of the robotics research engineer will be to perform cutting-edge research in advanced robot perception, planning, motion control, and/or human-collaborative capabilities to implement and transition these advanced capabilities across the UTC business units. Robotics is a growth area at UTRC and applications to systems across UTC are expected. The robotics research engineer will primarily contribute as a team member enabling new applications of interest to UTC with a focus on applying her/his relevant technical background and skills while also developing new skills within the robotics discipline needed for current and future research and development projects.
Prospective candidates should have prior exposure to and familiarity with robotic or unmanned systems (mobile ground or aerial robots or manipulators and associated sensing and perception subsystems). The candidate should have experience with hands-on hardware and software development for robotic systems. Familiarity with robot vision systems (monocular or stereo vision and lidar) is particularly desired. Some experience with embedded systems and robotics software architectures, frameworks, and tools such as the Robot Operating System and 3-D physics-based robot simulators is preferred. Also desired is research interest in enabling robotic intelligence for safe interaction and collaboration with humans.
M.S. in robotics, broader engineering disciplines (electrical, mechanical, aerospace, or industrial), or computer science with up to 3 years of experience.
The candidate must be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team focused on innovation and be able to partner with leading worldwide institutions to fulfill organizational objectives. The candidate is expected work effectively with the UTRC program offices and UTC business units, with teams of researchers within the Robotics Group and across the Autonomous and Intelligent Systems Department and across UTRC and UTC, and in support of appropriate government funding agencies to enhance existing programs, support opportunities, and assist in the acquisition of contract awards. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
