Job Summary

The Design Certification Support Group is seeking an experienced Principal Systems Engineer to support CS, GS and CNS certification programs in the Software discipline. The candidate is expected to have full life cycle certification experience in this discipline. This position includes review and approval of certification compliance data, interface with customers, suppliers, and external certification authorities, and hands-on work with engineering teams to provide guidance in the development of and adherence to certification-related processes.  Sufficiently qualified and experienced candidates may be able to perform this role working remotely.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as a compliance evaluator, to review software, hardware, and/or system engineering artifacts to FIND compliance to the applicable systems guidance, standards, and regulations including but not limited to TSOs, DO-178B/C, FAA Order 8110.49, DO-254, DO-160, ARP4754, DO-297, Advisory Circulars, Foreign Certification Memos, etc.

  • Serve as compliance approver, to formally approve engineering artifacts for compliance to the applicable guidance, standards, and regulations.  

  • Work with engineering to resolve findings of non-compliance to the applicable guidance, standards, and regulations.

  • Provides certification interface with customers, design specialists, suppliers and subcontracts, allocating compliance demonstration expectations.

  • Assist engineering with technical proposal preparation and serve as the subject matter expert in non-advocate role, for internal and customer reviews of engineering artifacts for compliance with the applicable guidance, standards, and regulations.  

  • Mentor engineering during the development of systems detailed planning in the context of a program team, including customization of systems development processes.

  • Provide independent assessment of airworthiness process adherence.

  • Assure that project planning is accomplished to the appropriate level of fidelity and that development teams are following appropriate processes.

  • Understand and utilize internal processes, methods and tools for review and approval of engineering artifacts for compliance.  Understand current development and documentation processes and techniques. Review metrics and defects trends, identify systemic root causes and process improvements.  Recommend new approaches, tools and techniques that drive continuous improvement in development, review and approval processes.

  • Maintain awareness of technology within the domains of their area of expertise and develop technology strategies for the domains in the area of expertise.

  • Mentors product development teams in the utilization of the appropriate processes and tools during product development, thus increasing product quality and improving customer satisfaction.  Recommends process improvements based upon metrics and defect trends.

  • Complete recurrent training expectations applicable for finding compliance to guidance, standards, and regulations.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline; identified skills and experience.

  • 8 years of progressively responsible engineering experience, including up to 4 years of educational experience.

  • Must have passed or be able to pass the TSO Compliance Representative (TCR) application/selection process to be nominated by Avionics Certification and authorized as a compliance approver.

  • Have significant domain knowledge and knowledge of products, systems and applicable regulatory requirements for software. May be considered a domain specialist or a generalist in multiple domains and/or systems areas of expertise.
